Beth wald
In her award winning photography, Beth Wald tells stories with compelling imagery as she explores human connections with land and nature. She is particularly interested in telling stories about how indigenous and traditional cultures are struggling to survive in the face of environmental and social changes and she believes that photography can inspire, instill pride of place and culture, create important visual testimonies, connect with people who are world’s away, and help marginalized peoples fight for their way of life.
Beth’s work taken her around the globe, from the Arctic to the tip of South America, from Pakistan to Cuba, and from the icy Himalayan peaks to the stifling heat of East Africa’s Great Rift Valley. She has made numerous journeys into remote regions of Afghanistan and Tajikistan to photograph mountain tribes, their subsistence lifestyles and connection to wildlife, she has documented threats posed by large scale mining to indigenous people and fragile ecosystems in a little known corner of Ecuador, photographed ground-breaking re-wilding projects and community conservation in northern Argentina, and numerous other projects.
She has twenty years’ experience photographing for a wide variety of publications, including National Geographic, Smithsonian and Outside magazines and for clients such as Nikon, Patagonia, The North Face and others and has partnered with numerous non-profits as well. She has conducted visual storytelling workshops and trainings for journalists in Afghanistan, indigenous youth in Guyana and under-served students in northern New Mexico.
Beth is the recipient of the prestigious Rowell Award, and has also received awards from Pictures of the Year International, American Photographer and the Banff Mountain Film Festival, among others. She is member of The Photo Society, the International League of Conservation Photographers and National Geographic Image Collection.
Beth lives in El Rito where she hikes, climbs, runs, cares for a menagerie of animals and tries to keep a garden alive in between wide-ranging travels.
